Botox/Filler Q & A

What is Botox?

Botox is the first treatment to receive FDA approval for temporarily smoothing crow’s feet, forehead lines, and frown lines. It’s also the most popular non-surgical cosmetic treatment in the world for treating the signs of aging, such as fine lines and wrinkles.

Safety is always an important consideration, and more than 15 years of clinical studies back Botox. In addition to cosmetic applications, doctors have used Botox for medical purposes for more than 50 years, including treatment for neck spasms, excessive sweating, lazy eye, overactive bladder, and migraines.

Botox works by temporarily impeding facial muscles from going through their full range of motion. That leaves those muscles incapable of tugging or pulling your skin into lines, folds, and wrinkles.

The formula consists of Clostridium botulinum, a substance that’s toxic in larger concentrations. The amount used in Botox is minute, and perfectly safe. Treatments take just 5-10 minutes, and the results develop in 24-48 hours. You can expect your results to last around four months, at which time you can decide whether to come in for another treatment at PRP in Philadelphia.

What are dermal fillers?

Natural collagen depletion is a primary cause of facial wrinkles, sagging skin, and thinning lips. Dermal fillers work by replacing lost facial volume with a gel-like formulation. Many fillers are made of hyaluronic acid, a substance found naturally in your skin.

Dr. Kauffman injects dermal fillers into the areas of your face that need additional volume. The fillers plump and smooth your skin, making wrinkles less noticeable and lifting sagging skin. Dermal fillers also add shape and volume for thicker lips.

There are many different types of fillers to choose from, each formulated for use in specific areas, including:

  • Cheeks
  • Lips
  • Smile lines
  • Marionette lines
  • Lip lines

Dr. Kauffman and the team at PRP in Philadelphia are always researching new injectables to make sure you have access to the very latest aesthetic options. Dr. Kauffman will discuss the best fillers or injectables to meet your specific needs.
