What are fillers?

Soft-tissue fillers are the second most popular minimally invasive procedures performed every year, right behind Botox. They can have a wide range of molecular makeups, and most replicate or imitate naturally occurring substances in our body.

Modern dermal fillers are made to smooth the skin and eliminate undesirable signs of aging. Some fillers, such as Juvéderm and Restylane, you may have heard of. Others haven’t hit the mainstream and aren’t widely known outside of cosmetics.

What do fillers do?

Your skin stays tight and smooth because of three chemicals: collagen, hyaluronic acid, and elastin. They keep your skin soft, spongy, and smooth by creating a type of meshwork directly underneath your skin.

As you age, you begin to produce less of each of them, and your skin starts to sag. Dermal fillers add collagen, hyaluronic acid, and elastin back into the areas you choose to target. The result is plumper, smoother skin. Dr. Kauffman uses fillers to help with the following:

Unlike Botox, which uses a neurotoxin to block muscle signals, dermal fillers resupply naturally-occurring chemicals, which means your face won’t look frozen or unnatural. With proper care, the effect of fillers should last for up to a year.

When it comes to post-treatment swelling, you might experience mild bruising and swelling for up to a week. You can treat pain with an ice pack.

The best thing about fillers, however, are the immediate results. You’ll be able to tell the difference on the day of your treatment.
